Our blades are 1/4" A36 steel with reinforced centers and sharpened edges to aid in ground penetration. Some of our competitors have 3/8" BLADES which REQUIRES EXTRA WEIGHT to penetrate the ground, requiring a LARGER AND HEAVIER MACHINE to operate. 3/8" BLADES have NO FLEXABILITY, and the extra force needed for penetration can cause damage to frame structures. Also beware of manufactures claiming to have HARDENED STEEL BLADES. Hardened blades are brittle and crack instead of bending causing a costly five step repair process, if even repairable. The newest design being offered by manufactures is a manual swing out frame. Three spaded units are designed to eliminate the need for a swing out frame that a four spaded unit would require. We reduce our costs by leaving over engineered options off our simple reliable design. The Dirt Works Tree Spade three spaded fixed frame design offers ample opening to reach around trees and shrubs without expensive, complicated and unnecessary swing out designs. We have seen our competitors build larger three spaded units; (32"- 36"). Larger units require larger blades; larger blades require larger, heavier machines to operate. That same manufacture is now offering the identical reproduction of our Dirt Works Tree Spade they previously claimed would not function or operate because of the fixed frame design. Please be sure to research all competitors ads thoroughly to protect yourself against fraudulent claims. The Dirt Works Tree Spade has been in production for over 20 years. We have moved literally thousands of trees (specifically evergreens) over the years with this machine. We have also seen other manufactures sell units with cone style blades. Cone style blades will not penetrate the ground. Beware of blades with bend lines starting at the tip and flaring out at the top, unparallel to the cylinder. Be sure to ask competitors for a video showing their “proven†3/8†spade design penetrating the ground. Using the competitors 3/8†spade design, smaller and midsize machines will not penetrate the ground without the use of rear mounted down riggers or a similar hold down system. In this case heavier is not better. Past research and development has proven ¼†A36 steel blades to be the most effective ground penetrating blade on the market. All other blade thickness tests have failed, with the blade being restricted to less than a third of the potential 100% ground penetration capability. The Dirt Works unit has truncated style pointed spade type blades, notice how the bend lines are parallel to the cylinder. Good survival rates require knowledge about the plant material being transplanted and following good nursery techniques. For every inch of trunk, a tree needs a year of adjustment to begin healthy growth. Therefore, a tree with a 3" trunk won't show significant growth until three years after transplanting. Spring Only - Fruit, nut, linden, magnolia, honey locust, birch, beech, oak and larch. Spring or Fall - Shade trees or ornamental shrubs. Either early spring or in the fall when leaves turn color and are dropping. Remove broken or conflicting branches and multiple leaders.
