"Barns" Their History, Preservation, and Restoration by Charles Klamkin This is a book of the early American barn- a true landmark across America. The author begins with the chapter "Save the Barns" a special plea for renovation, and preservation as opposed to allowing them to be stripped for siding or razed for suburban development. Chapters recount the history of barn building techniques in the 18th and 19th centuries, exploring the wide variety of architectural styles and shapes, including round, rectangular and octagonal. There are dairy barns, grain, cattle and tobacco; ice houses and other outbuildings. Hardware is covered- hinges, stanchions, nails; the final two chapters are devoted to restoration. Topics such as electrical, plumbing, heating, building new roofs, etc. Nice book 143 photographs. Published 1973. This 162 page hardcover book with dustjacket is in very good condition.
