Build the metal lathe shown above! The front and back view shown, has a capacity of diameters up to four and one half inches and a maximum distance between centers of about five and one half inches. The tools required to build your lathe are simple to be sure, a hacksaw, breast drill, files,clamps, and a few drills along with some taps and dies. An accurate metal ruler would be an asset as well. Your metal lathe could be used to produce many fine items such as a brass canon, model rail road parts, steam engines and even some gun smith work as well. Materials are readily available to construct your lathe with some simple angle iron for the feet and bed to start.The lathe head needs a simple cone pulley and a threaded spindle which can be purchased from most tool supply houses or dealers and block of Cold rolled steel which can be purchased through a machine shop orif you wish, a piece of brass or bronze. Beyond that, all that is needed is a small 1/4 horse electric motor. (please look at our rules and privacy policy) |
