Lorraine Torres is presenting: Macom 10GHZ microwave brick oscillator 10224MHZ
MaCom 10GHz Microwave Brick Oscillator 10224MHz
The oscillator uses an ovenized overtone crystal (at 100.235294 MHz) which is multiplied by a factor of 102 to produce the final output frequency. Output power is approximately +8dBm, a signal level that is well tolerated by many mixers directly. Power supply voltage is –20V DC (yes, that is MINUS 20 volts), typical current draw is from about 750mA when cold to around 500mA when warm. I suppose a DC/DC converter could be made to run off 12 volts if desired.
This oscillator has a phase-lock monitor test point, and also an alarm output that closes a set of relay contacts when the unit is out of lock.
Unit is a used pull from a microwave communications radio that has had the crystal replaced with a commercially manufactured unit on 100.235294 MHz. In single quantities the crystals alone are over $80. Unit has been allowed to temperature stabilize before alignment and should be within 1kHz of 10224MHz. Crystal is new and will have some aging, but can always be re-netted if a frequency source is available.
There is a nice article in the ARRL UHF/Microwave Projects Manual (1994) titled 'Phase Lock Control Circuit for Use with Brick Type Oscillators' by C.L. Houghton, WB6IGP and Kerry Bane, N6IZW on locking these types of oscillators to a 10MHz reference to achieve very tight frequency control.
