RCA OSCILLOSCOPE MODEL 54-45 WITH ASSEMBLY MANUAL
The Manual includes the Schematic, Parts List,
Use of the Scope, Scope Troubleshooting, and more.
I built this Oscilloscope in 1970 while taking a Home Study Course from
RCA Institutes when I was still residing in Michigan.
I have not used this Oscilloscope since approximately 1989.
I had it stored in a box. I checked it, and turned it on. It still works.
(See Note in red text under Overall Info below.)
This 3" CRT Oscilloscope is a General Purpose Instrument, especially in the field of Audio Equipment, and TV Servicing.
The 7 Vacuum Tubes inside the Oscilloscope are:
V1 = 6BL8, V2 = 12AU7, V3 =1V2, V4 = 6D10, V5 = 12AU7, V6 = 6X4
8 1/2" x 11" Contains 40 Pages plus Covers plus two inserts measuring 16 3/8" x 21 3/8", which folds down to 8 1/4" x 10 5/8" with 17 total Figures. Images 12 and 13 shows just one side of the patterns in each sheet.
I can't remember if all these 3 test leads in fact do belong with this Scope. However, they do fit the Vertical Input, Ground, and Horizontal Input knobs on the Front Panel.
Very good cosmetic condition including inside the chassis.
The power cord and test leads are in very good condition.
The manual is in good condition. No missing, or torn pages. Just a minor crease on the Back Cover.
The step by step brackets ( v ) are checked, and some starting and ending times
are recorded on some pages. This is typical in all my kit building manuals.
This Oscilloscope is fairly heavy. It ways a little over 11 LBS by itself without any packing.
After the pictures were taken, I left the scope on for 3 days straight, with a sine wave on the screen, and no problems with any screen position drifting.
PLEASE NOTE: The Focus Control is at it's maximum focus position, and can't seem to get the initial setting beam spot small enough like it was in the past. The Vertical Position Control, is also at it's maximum setting, and can't get the vertical pattern high enough in the center of the screen. The Focus, and Vertical Gain Potentiometers, or their associated components, may have changed their values according to the Troubleshooting Section. I would not suspect any of the Vacuum Tubes to be weak, as this Scope was only used occasionally, but anything is possible. The sine waves pattern that appears not to be clear, is normal. This is due to the 6.3 VAC input from the rear of the Scope, (Image 2-b), to the Vertical Input, and is caused by it's rapid horizontal drift, as explained in the Manual. There are 4 Pages of troubleshooting the Scope itself. Image 11 shows only the first 2 Pages. All other Controls and Switches are working great, as they should!
Images 8 and 9 show black electrical tape around the neck of the CRT. I cannot remember if it was furnished that way, or I wrapped it myself for some reason or another at the time I assembled it. Could have been for safety purpose.
Finally, this Oscilloscope is still in good usable condition!
