Kensington's 6000 Series Precision Stage offers bi-directional repeatability, minimum incremental motion, and display resolutions to better than 0.025 µm. Acceleration range is 0.001-0.25g, and the velocity range spans 7 orders of magnitude: from 0.01µm/s to 100mm/s. 200mm/s top speed is an option and involves no resolution tradeoffs.
The drivetrain is composed of a high torque DC servo motor driving a high-precision leadscrew. Unlike implementations such as impulse-type drives, the servo loop ensures quiet operation, without resonances or excessive heat, at all speeds, accelerations and loads. The output spindle assembly is constrained in low-friction bearings, with an integrated linear optical encoder making positioning immune to linkage backlash. The encoder includes a fiducial track for absolute zero reference, optical limit switches, and programmable soft limits. Hysteresis and wear are eliminated in our proprietary, non-contacting read-head design. Velocities are regulated to: ±1% RMS above ~10 µm/s and the servo compensation system also provides stability when subjected to mechanical disturbances such as shifting loads.
The maintenance-free linear stage is easy-to-use, with a high-level mnemonic command set that has built-in diagnostic intelligence. This facilitates compact, modular and supportable application code. Application parameters such as acceleration, deceleration, and velocity may be changed at any time and stored in non-volatile memory within the controller. The stage may also be used in manual mode by commanding the motor off and using the knob. Safety considerations have been addressed through the use of real-time force-sensing and programmable soft limits. A fiducial "home" position allows robust recovery of the coordinate system on power-up, and an emergency motor-shut-down feature is provided to halt motion immediately, without the need for system initialization to resume motion. No PID parameter tuning is necessary and very high step-and-settle performance is provided via advanced mechanical
