The Proud Heritage of AGCO Tractors, by Norm Swinford, published by the American Society of Agricultural Engineers, St. Joseph, Mich., 1999. 8½ x 11 hardcover, ix + 279 pages, ISBN 1-892769-08-5.
Please note this book is new, not used, with a new dust jacket.
With the acquisition of Deutz-Allis in 1990, the Allis-W Gleaner Corporation (AGCO) became an industry power house. The Proud Heritage of AGCO Tractors, one of the book from the American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE) series on agricultural equipment manufacturers, delves into the history of this unique company.
Author Norm Swinford tells a story that combines the old and the new - focusing primarily on yesterday but also on today. With its roots in the North American farm equipment industry, AGCO's heritage reaches as far back as the mid-1800s through many of its brands. While some of these brands no longer exist, their ideas and innovations are nonetheless a part of AGCO's heritage.
Each of the 16 chapters focuses on a different company, providing a brief company history before concentrating primarily on the tractor line. The end of each chapter contains the important Nebraska tractor test results and specifications.
Jam-packed with over 750 photos (more than one-third in color), no other book provides as much detail about so many AGCO-related tractors. Within these pages explore the genealogy of the AGCO Corporation, more specifically the tractor product lines that, in some mostly indirect manner, contributed to the current extensive line of tractors under the AGCO banner.
Only a very few farm equipment firms can claim a direct lineage from founder to the present, especially if the firm is more than a few (human) generations old. The history of the AGCO Corporation's antecedents is strewn with mergers, acquisitions, and bankruptcies which provide an interesting and intricate trail to follow. Such grand old names as Advance-Rumely, Allis-Chalmers, Deutz-Fahr, and Deutz-Allis; Hart-Parr, Oliver, Minneapolis-Moline, Avery, and Cockshutt; Wallis, Case Plow, Massey-Harris, and Ferguson all made their contribution to AGCO Allis, White, and Massey Ferguson, now a part of AGCO. They are The Proud Heritage of AGCO Tractors.
Norm Swinford began working as a field representative for Allis-Chalmers in 1957. Thirty years later he retired from Deutz-Allis as Product Manager for tractors. Over the years Mr. Swinford's enthusiasm for these products has increased. An accomplished author, Swinford has written Allis-Chalmers Farm Equipment 1914-1985, A Guide to Allis-Chalmers Farm Tractors, Allis-Chalmers Construction Machinery & Industrial Equipment, and The Proud Heritage of AGCO Tractors. Mr. Swinford and his wife, Betty, have lived in the Milwaukee area for the past 41 years.

* U.S. media (book rate) mail is $4.50. PLEASE NOTE that our experience over the 2004-5 holiday season was that an alarming number of books took over four weeks to be delivered to states west of the Mississippi River. We think—and hope—this probably has something to do with homeland security rather than any sudden deterioration of postal service, but we really do not know. All we know for certain is that we do NOT want to deal with a number of inquires and complaints about “Where’s my books?” when there is NOTHING we can do after we hand the package to the postal clerk and have the receipt in hand. If you want to use media (book rate) mail please wait at least four weeks before you contact us to inquire about the whereabouts of your book. And note that all we’ll be able to tell you is the date we mailed it from the Post Office. We will NOT be able to tell you where the book is, or when the Post Office is going to deliver it.
