ANTIQUE GRAY MARINE INBOARD MOTOR
Not sure of horsepower, only markings I could find on engine is on cylinder right side 29205 and on the drive flange 29134. Engine looks almost powder coated in thick black finish which makes it hard to read numbers.
This Engine is water cooled, complete with a shaft driven solid brass water pump. Cooling water would have been picked up through a pipe from the bottom of the boat to a check valve at the inlet of the water pump. Only markings on pump is D6 I am assuming it was made by Brass Works in Syracuse, NY as was other pumps used on Gray Marine engines.
The engine is equipped with a complete brass Schebler carburetor, Patent Oct, 14 1902 No.14 which is drawn in through a brass intake valve installed within the throat of its connecting pipe.
A commutator equipped with lever advance, sits atop a geared shaft from the Flywheel to provide a switched impulse to the buzz coil at the appropriate time. (Top dead center during starting and advanced during running.) This engine can run in both directions, depending upon how the commutator is set and the experience of the operator in changing direction. Included in the sale of this engine is a working Ford Buzz Coil, which I will provide instructions on how to set up to run engine.
This engine has been in storage for the last 10 years or so. It was restored by a retired machinist and was part of a large collection of engines that I am selling. The engine was shown at engine shows all over New England as well as Mystic Seaport and has won numerous ribbons. It is a fine example of early boat propulsion. It is complete and very rare to find, it will make an excellent addition to your antique engine collection.
The engine fired and ran for a few seconds by using the primer cup only. I did not try to run it with gas into the carburetor, so I cannot attest as weather it would continue to run using the carburetor. I also did not run water through the pump to see if that works. I am assuming that the engine was put to storage in running condition, the owner was very meticulous and I also know this engine was run at shows. The engine will need someone to go through it and check the components to make sure everything is operating correctly. There is some rust on parts that are steel that are not painted and the nut on the flywheel is loose.
