PRE-MIXED REFRACTORY CEMENT - Item #
Rutland Refractory Cement is a sodium silicate based, alkaline fireclayready-mixed refractory mortar. It is an air-set and heat-cure product. Subjected to high heat for several hours, it loses its water solubility and makes afire-cured bond stronger than the bonded firebrick or flue tile. Useful forsetting and bonding firebrick in the firebox chambers of fireplaces, furnaces, stoves, and incinerators, or for setting flue tile with thin, 1/16" to 1/8"glue line bonds. Contains no asbestos. Easy to trowel. Flue caps recommended newly built chimneys mortared with Refractory Cement. Not recommended where fire-cured adhesion to metal is desired. For this purpose use Rutland Stove® or Black Furnace Cement. Passes Flammability test ASTM E 136-79, Standard Test Method for Behavior of Materials in Vertical Tube Furnace at 750°C (1382°F). One gallon covers approximately 45 firebricks, 4 1/2" x 9".
Listed below are the things you should do if you have a chimney fire.
* * * Call the fire department. Hopefully you won't need them but don't wait until you do before calling.
* * * Locate everyone and get them out of the house.
* * * If you have a fireplace with glass doors, close the doors and the vents. If you have a wood stove, close the doors and the air inlets. Do not close the damper of either a wood stove or a fireplace.
* * * If flames are visible at the chimney top, hose down the roof but not the chimney. Spraying water on a hot chimney will very likely damage it.
* * * Call a chimney sweep before using the chimney again.
Don't be misled into believing that a chimney fire is a good way to clean a chimney. A chimney fire is a serious occurrence and can be very damaging to a chimney. Often a well constructed chimney will confine the first chimney fire to the chimney itself, while repeated chimney fires increase the likelihood of damage to the home. Chimney fires, even small ones, may very likely damage the chimney to the point it is unsafe to use..
