Here I am offering an interesting book from September, 1916.
THE CARPENTER soft cover book contains 64 pages.
This book is, “A monthly journal for carpenters, stair builders, machine wood workers, planning mill men and kindred industries.
Book contains many short stories, with lots of information. You will find the following information in this small book.
FRANK DUFFY, GENERAL SECRETARY
This includes pictures of the following:
OUR NINETEENTH GENERAL CONVENTION AT FT. WORTH TEXAS
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AUDITORIUM, CONVENTION HALL
HEADQUARTERS OF THE U. B. of C. & J. of A., INDIANAPOLIS, IND
THE SOLUTION OF THE LABOR QUESTIONS
THE CONSTRUCTIVE FORCE OF TRADE UNIONISM
THE FARM FOR THE RETIRED CARPENTER
The above are only a few of the many stories you will find.
Also, the book contains, OFFICIAL INFORMATION on:
While I was reading through this interesting piece from our past, I came to one of my most interesting pages. CLAIMS PAID, this page consist of all the claim numbers, names of deceased or disabled, the local union number, the years and months as a member, the cause of death or disability, and the amount paid. Can you imagine what would happen today, if this information was given out. A total of 148 claims were paid out during the month of July, 1916 with a total of 2
A few pages of CASUAL COMMENT, this contains many short paragraphs of general information.
CORRESPONDENCE also takes a few pages up in here.
CRAFT PROBLEMS, section has CONCRETE FORMS for this month.
Toward the ending of the book has a DEATH ROLL, this list:
The areas within the USA that have accepted contracts and the pay scales. Ex: St. Cloud, Minn. L. U. No 930 contractors accepted to pay the new wage scale which calls for .50 an hour until May 1, 1917, and .55 for the following year. (and we complain today) and I wonder how they came up with DEATH ROLL for the title of that??
If you think reading the above was interesting, this book is a must have. Was surprised at myself, when I picked this up to glance through to sell on here, I had to read it from cover to cover. VERY INTERESTING and FUN!!
When we cleaned dad’s things out, we found this book, and it originally belonged to our Uncle Jake. Jacob Fine, of Milford New Jersey.
The book is in good condition. There are marks on the cover, and a tiny bend in the lower right corner. Covers and pages are intact.
Don’t miss out on this wonderful piece.
