How To Rebuild and Restore Farm Tractor Engines
0ld tractors are like old friends . . . you don't give 'em up just because they slow down, start belching smoke, and make odd noises. No, in the case of an antique tractor with a dying motor, the best thing to do is haul it into the shop and rebuild its engine. It's a big job, but it is one that most hobbyists can do with a little help.
In this book, author Spencer Yost walks you through an engine rebuild, from the time you tow that busted tractor into the shop to the sweet moment when the starter spins the freshly restored engine and it barks to life. In between those moments, he covers shop tools and safety; removing and disassembling the engine; rebuilding both overhead and flathead valve trains; assessing and rebuilding crankshaft and piston assemblies; rebuilding carbs and fuel systems; timing magnetos and distributors; and much more. Tips for enhancing your tractor's performance are also included.
Yost covers both vertical fours and opposed twins by following the teardown and rebuild of several popular antique tractor engines, including Case CO, Farmall F-20, Allis-Chalmers WC, Ford 8-N, and John Deere B. Whether you're performing a basic rebuild or a complete restoration, this book has the information you need to get your old friend running strong and back in the field again.
I'll Let Spencer tell you more.
"During every tractor restoration, everyone reaches milestones that are incredibly fulfilling. Without a doubt, one of the most significant is hearing your formerly worn, stuck or broken engine-the same engine that everyone said wouldn't ever run again-bark to life and run as it did coming out of the showroom.
My first engine rebuild was a motorcycle engine. I was 15 and inexperienced, and had no real direction other than a few books and a shop teacher who answered a few questions. Looking back, it's a miracle the engine ran; but it did and I, quite frankly, was prouder than I probably had a right to be, and certainly prouder than I had ever been of myself. It was a difficult puzzle, one that was important to me, and I solved it. That's an accomplishment anyone can relate to, and one that I hope I can share with you in this book. With each engine, that feeling of accomplishment returns. I still get every bit as excited when a newly rebuilt engine cranks up and runs.
"Getting to that point is often the culmination of a lot of work, planning, learning, growing, dedication, and ultimately, commitment. It's no small feat to bring an engine back from the grave. This book will show you through the entire process, all the way to the other side of engine restoration, because the world is littered with engine rebuild projects that were started and never finished.
"I have endeavored to create a book that is not only full of the advice and guidance you need to professionally restore an engine, but a book that is readable, likable, and motivational. It will serve as a guide through the trials and tribulations you are sure to endure.
"If it were possible to rebuild an antique tractor engine by using the manuals alone, there would be no need for how-to books. Service manuals are, without exception, written for experienced, professionally (and factory) trained technicians who only need a few details and specifications to help them rebuild an engine. In fact, just a quick scan of most service manuals will find the dreaded phrase "...disassembly is self-evident," or my personal favorite, "crankshaft and bearing service does not deviate from normal professional procedures." If we all knew what a "normal professional procedure" was, or if the disassembly really was self-evident, then the manuals would suffice.
"Of course, the manuals don't suffice because we are not professional mechanics. That is where this book picks up the slack. This book will tie together all the conceptual and organizational issues and elaborate on the procedures the manuals already assume you know how to perform. In fact, except in the most ridiculously simple circumstances, you'll see very few assumptions about specific procedures or your skill level.
"In short, this book will give you the basic skills you need to rebuild any antique tractor engine, regardless of its age or manufacturer."
