This High Voltage Transformer came out of a Philips Oralix Dental Xray tubehead. It is rated at 65KV @ 7mA with 120 Volts on the primary winding. This transformer is designed to operate while fully immersed in transformer oil and degassed. The arc you see is done in open air for a limited amount of time with a variac controller at very low voltage to show that this transformer is in good operating condition and produces high voltage..(Full voltage in the open air WILL destroy the transformer) The transformer is designed to be totally submerged in transformer oil only. The reason for the oil is to insulate the coils and the reason for the vacuum is that a vacuum will degas(remove air and moisture) the oil and transformer. With just setting it in oil and no degassing that may leave air pockets and high voltage can arc across the coils through the air pockets.
