Useful Information about PEX pipe…
PEX is polyethylene (PE) which has undergone a change in molecular structure whereby the polymer chains are chemically linked, or cross-linked (X), with each other to form a three-dimensional network. The result is a thermoset polymer with improved properties, including mechanical stability at elevated temperatures, chemical and environmental stress-crack resistance (ESCR), and reduced creep. A thermoset polymer can be thought of as a scrambled egg – once you mix the yolk and white, you cannot separate them. Non-cross-linked polymer, known as thermoplastic polymer, can be thought of as chocolate – you can always melt and reform it into some other shape. The number of links between the PE molecules is described as the degree of cross-linking.
PEX pipe can be compared to a chain-link fence, which will expand with excessive pressure and then return to its original shape when the excessive pressure is removed. For example, PEX pipe will allow the expansion of water that freezes inside. Non-cross-linked pipe reacts similar to a fence created of rigid pieces, which may resist higher pressure before initial expansion, but once it does deform and expand, it is forever changed and weakened.
PEX is a flexible pipe that is excellent for use in hot- and cold-water plumbing and hydronic heating applications. PEX pipes resist corrosion, erosion and abrasion encountered during installation, as well as being lightweight, and easy to work with.
