Take it from someone who has learned a lot of body and paint lessons on the job, the hard way. I have personally painted over 30 vehicles and two motorcycles, and a boat. I suppose you could call this "auto painting for dummies" not to imply that you are dumb, but rather just a non- text book approach to real life painting scenarios. I used to want to do body and paint, but really didn't know how and I always felt stupid going into the auto paint supply store and didn't feel as though I knew what supplies I needed. My brother is a painter and I have watched him for years and my best friend's dad chuck had a shop and I watched him too. I've seen them mix and spray lacquer, enamel, basecoat/clearcoat, imron, etc. I can help you to educate yourself with what and how of body work and paint and avoid a lot of the typical mistakes people make when attempting bodywork for the first time. My first paint job was in a barn with poor lighting, a borrowed air compressor, and a whole roll of 10-2 romex wired into my mom's dryer plug. Sound familiar? I didn't know how to get the paint to shine, how many coats to put on, how much air pressure to use, how far and how fast to spray, etc,etc,etc. It is entirely possible to turn out a nice job for a driver or even a show car, yourself. Save money! So many paint shops are charging in excess of 3k to do what you could do for around 600.00 and a few evenings. Restore a classic car or just clean up the old beater truck you've been driving that is full of dents, rust, and faded glory. You can do it.
