52 inch Wide Belt Sander, or Abrasive plane? This is an older, simpler machine, It uses simple air controlls, rather than expensive, complicated electronical stuff. We've had it for about ten years, and the worst problem was fixed by blowing the dust out of the lines. It is built of lots of off-the-shelf , generic components. The only proprietary part is the Timesaver control regulator, and a new one was only $69 last time I checked. It does use a steel contact drum, instead of an easily worn graphite covered platen. So maybe 'abrasive plane' is a better name for it? The roller could be coated with polyurethane. It would be quieter, but less precise- the rubber 'squishyness' would tend to round off edges. We have used it in shop veneering 4x8 sheets. We would first sand the core sheet, then apply the veneer in a vacuum bag press, then sand again lightly to remove the veneer tape. That;s pretty accurate for veneer that's only 24 thousands of an inch thick, over 32 square feet. In spite of the lack of a platen, the washboards it leaves are no worse than those left by the usuall platen-machies, since thay are caused by the joint in the paper, not the machine. Belts from Klingspor come to us overnight, and cost about $60 each. The 40 grits last a loooong time, the 100 grits not so long, depending on species. Some plug them up, others burn the belt. A light touch is better- .010, or 1/8 turn on the up-feed crank. For heavier material removal, 1/3rd of a turn is good, about 1/32".
