The Icom IC-781 has to be one of the finest transceivers ever made. Not until the announcement of Icom’s IC-7800 (>$10,000) were they able to do better. Here is your opportunity to have one, one that has been well cared for by someone who admires its features and capabilities – and – has taken good care of it, me.
I like having the best radio. And with that kind of investment I keep it clean and in top operating performance. But now it needs to go to someone else who knows and respects this top of the line radio.
Hopefully you know this radio, if you don’t the manual and mail lists/reflectors on the internet will teach you. There is a great community of users out there. Follow this link for owner comments www.eham.net/reviews/detail/399.
It has every filter available and they are easily switchable from the front panel. Everything is available on the front panel.
Don’t like menus? Look at the front panel on the IC-781. Essentially every setting and control is there not buried in a sub-menu. It even has a continuously adjustable AGC and Wide Band noise filter! Yes there are a few settings in a menu such as which filter to use when band switching. These are easily managed by observing the video display. Also note there is a composite output on the back for using an external monitor.
It even has an automatic antenna tuner built in - not an option.
Contests: I hosted the WRC-97 Argentine team and saw the IC-781 at work big time. I have used my 781 in many CW contests using TRLog (computer/radio interfaced) with my Alpha 91B. Works great. Just turn the 781’s output RF control down to 50-60 watts and blast away with 1500 watts with no trips and a clean 781 signal. The CW is perfectly shapped with rise time and fall times of 4-5ms. On SSB I often get comments about the full range transmit audio they hear from this radio.
This IC-781 has the much-desired whisper-quiet but effective Sherwood Engineering cooling fan. Also watch Inrad /inrad, they have announced a soon to be available roofing filter for the 781.
The rare MB-19 rack handles with their special screws are included. The handles are in excellent shape and make the radio look great – see the pictures.
Internal filters – look at the pictures and you will see each filter and which IF they are in.
I am including all the documents that came with the radio from the factory. That includes the original IC-781 operating manual, factory test results, Icom logbook, large block diagrams and schematics. Included will be a PDF copy – done professionally – of the service manual. I don’t have a printed copy.
