This Starrett 104 Speed Indicator is in good working conditon, and comes with a reproduction of the original directions, as well as a copy of page 116 & 117 from the Starrett catalogue, No. 17 showing the high speed indicator No. 104 and 106, along with a copy of the front page. Copies of the catalogue were provided to me by Rose Tools, Inc. and the date of the catalogue was verified as 1900 by the L.S. Starrett Company. Starrett also provided me with several copies of "The Starrett Story" which I am including.
I use the Starrett speed indicators to fine tune my 1916 Hercules Hit and Miss Engine when powering my grist mill. First I adjust the fuel and air by ear, then check the RPM with the speed indicator before grinding corn or wheat. Next, I start grinding and check the working RPM that is usually 20 RPM or less. According to my engine manual, like most Hit & Miss Engines my engine runs best hot, I lean the gas and adjust the air intake accordingly, carefully monitoring it with my speed indicator. After all, as I tell everyone this old engine is a real gas guzzler, and needs to be filled with gas the middle of June every year.
In the picture of the Speed Indicator, you will observe an ugly red thing that I make to go on the end of the indicator. If you prefer a pointed end rather than a flat one, currently the original black pointed end can be purchased from Starrett for $23.00.
